Mindset.

Being repeatedly confronted with America’s pervasive attachment to personal vehicles, a manifesto is necessary to detail the resulting ramifications and call for implementable change, personally and systemically.  This is to critically illustrate the harm of single-occupancy vehicles upon individuals and communities, perpetuated by political leadership, general society, and even more specifically,
by design.

DRIVE LESS

Mix up commuting habits to discover new routes.
Trip-chain, car-share, and co-own.
Slow down and smell the air.
Choice is a luxury, so give space to those with less.

There is a significant spatial tax on prioritizing personal vehicles.

RE-LOCALIZE

Live locally: shop, work, & enjoy nearby first.
Become neighbors and travel together.

Rampant globalism leads to a lack of local economic consideration.

QUESTION EVERYTHING

Build individual habits incrementally.
Re-orient relational networks.
Blend existing systems with exercised creativity.
Be open to continual critique.

Current systems of practice have developed into intransigent regimes.

DECENTER INDIVIDUALISM

Consider alternative points of view.
Learn of historical tragedies and prevent future ones.
Step out of your comfort zone.

Extreme individual freedom for some results in the oppression of others.

REORIENT TO THE LAND

Acknowledge harm.
Realize kinship with non-humans.
Admit that existence is a privilege.

Natural ecosystems continually take the brunt of human “progress”

Tools.

Design alone can’t solve mobility issues, as it can’t change opinions and habits. However, our environments heavily influence our capacities for change, as our choices are intertwined with physical reality. We can only change what is available to us.

Therefore, a library of reasoning and resources should be continuously collected to assist those who shape our physical realities. Below is the beginning of that library.
